The Ontario government announced this week the rollout of its comprehensive fall immunization program, targeting flu, COVID-19, and RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) to protect communities as respiratory illness season approaches. The phased launch prioritizes high-risk groups before expanding to the general public on October 27.
COVID-19 vaccines become available starting September 22, followed by flu vaccines on September 29, initially for high-risk populations including hospitalized patients, hospital staff, long-term care residents and staff, and individuals 65 and older. The province has also expanded its RSV prevention program, with adults aged 60-74 meeting specific criteria and those 75+ eligible for RSV vaccines starting September 22. Newborns, infants, and high-risk children up to 24 months can receive RSV immunization beginning October 1, while pregnant women have the option of RSV vaccination to protect infants at birth.
Starting October 27, free flu and COVID-19 shots will be widely available to all Ontarians at participating pharmacies, public health units, and healthcare provider offices. Deputy Premier and Health Minister Sylvia Jones emphasized the government’s commitment to using “every tool in our toolbox to protect our communities, families and our most vulnerable.” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Kieran Moore stressed that staying current with seasonal vaccines is “a cornerstone of our preparedness this respiratory season,” noting the simple but effective step can protect individuals, families, and loved ones from serious illness during the upcoming fall and winter months.
