(By River)The Ontario government is launching a new $1.6-billion Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program to help municipalities build the roads, water, and wastewater services needed to support faster home construction. The funding is intended to remove bottlenecks in local infrastructure, a key hurdle to meeting the province’s goal of building 1.5 million homes by 2031.

Premier Doug Ford described the program as a crucial step in addressing Ontario’s housing crisis:
“We’re making historic investments to get shovels in the ground faster, because we know the biggest barrier to building homes is the lack of infrastructure. By partnering with municipalities, we’ll ensure the water, roads, and sewers are ready to support the homes our growing population needs.”
Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Paul Calandra emphasized the program’s role in aligning provincial and local priorities:
“Municipalities have told us that infrastructure funding is critical to unlocking housing. This program gives them the certainty they need to move ahead with projects that will directly enable more housing construction.”
The program will prioritize projects that demonstrate clear links to housing growth and will be available to municipalities across the province. According to the province, investments will also stimulate local economies and create jobs during construction, building on earlier provincial initiatives, including the Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund and the Building Faster Fund, both aimed at speeding up development approvals and infrastructure delivery.
