（By River）Ontario’s government has taken the next step on the Yonge North Subway Extension, awarding a $1.4 billion fixed‑price contract to North End Connectors. Aecon, FCC, and Ghella, will handle the design and construction of the twin 6.3 km tunnels stretching from Finch Station up to just south of Langstaff Road in Markham.
Premier Doug Ford framed the move as part of the province’s large‑scale transit push:
“The Yonge North Subway Extension is a critical part of our $70 billion investment to build public transit in communities across Ontario… we’re helping keep thousands of workers on the job and… help thousands of York Region commuters get where they need to go faster and more conveniently.”
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria added:
“Today, we’re taking a major step forward as we build the Yonge North Subway Extension, revolutionizing travel across the region and extending subway access to Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill for the first time.”
Once operational, the extension is expected to shift more than 90,000 daily trips onto transit, put 26,000 more people within a 10‑minute walk of a subway stop, and shave up to 22 minutes off commutes from Markham to downtown Toronto.
