(By River)Ontario has begun construction on the first of three new stations for the Scarborough Subway Extension, tackling congestion and expanding rapid transit in the GTA. Crews have started piling work at Scarborough Centre Station, which is designed to support over 10,000 passengers and more than 7,000 transfers during rush hour once complete.

The province has committed to fund one third of the final cost of 55 new Line 2 subway trains for the TTC as part of a single-source contract with Alstom Transport Canada Inc, which will support Canadian workers with good manufacturing jobs.
A quote from Karen Cameron, CEO of the Ontario Public Transit Association spoke out: “public transit sits at the intersection of affordability, economic development and housing that help drive growth in the province’s economy, and we are proud to support Premier Ford’s vision for a more interconnected Ontario.”

The new station will serve as a major regional hub, linking the TTC subway with a dedicated bus terminal offering seamless connections to GO Transit and other local services. It’s expected to bring 38,000 people within walking distance of subway service, and offers improved access to schools like Centennial College’s Progress Campus and U of T Scarborough, which will benefit nearly 30,000 students and staff.
Giles Gherson, speaking on behalf of provincial planners, summed up the project:
“Toronto’s congestion crisis is stifling our economy and undermining quality of life. Better transit is a critical solution. The new Scarborough Centre subway station will serve as a vital hub, moving people more efficiently across the city and region.”
This undertaking is part of Ontario’s broader transit push that includes the Ontario Line, Eglinton Crosstown West, Yonge North Extension, and the rest of the Scarborough Subway Extension.
