(By River)Ontario has officially opened the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) School of Medicine in Brampton—marking the first new medical school in the Greater Toronto Area in more than a century.

This opening introduces an inaugural cohort of 94 undergraduate medical students, selected from a pool of more than 6,400 applicants, alongside postgraduate programs starting simultaneously.
Premier Doug Ford positioned the school as a strategic push to shore up Ontario’s healthcare capacity:
“Our government is delivering on our plan to protect and improve access to health care in Ontario by opening our first new medical school in 20 years, right here in Brampton.”
Nearly $180 million from the province covers both the Brampton campus build and operating costs through 2028, including two primary care teaching clinics meant to benefit local communities. The state-of-the-art facility, designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects, includes advanced simulation labs, collaborative learning spaces, and a bright central atrium.
A new medical school is also slated to open at York University by 2028; expanding seats across the province is a core part of addressing physician shortages.
“By training more physicians right here at home, we are strengthening the future of care in our communities,” said Dr. Zainab Abdurrahman, president of the Ontario Medical Association. “We look forward to supporting these future doctors as they begin their journey in medicine. Together we can ensure a healthier Ontario for generations to come.”
